Norman B. Harwood, 94, U.S. Navy Veteran
Norman B. Harwood, 94, of Amherst Township, passed away Friday November 7, 2025 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain.
He was born November 4, 1931 in Oberlin to Harry & Mildred Harwood (nee McQuate) and grew up on the family farm on Butler Road. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1949.
Norman served with the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Dortch DD670 as a Machinist Mate First Class. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Occupation Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed at Northern Ohio Telephone Company in Norwalk, Wolf Electric in Vermilion and at the Ford Assembly Plant in Avon Lake where he retired after 20 years.
Norman was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in South Amherst, VFW Post #1662 in Amherst and the Beaver Creek Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed attending his annual Navy reunion, watching westerns, antique tractors, model airplanes and learning the history of old airplanes.
He is survived by his son James B. Harwood, grandchildren: Madilynn Garcia (Louis), Brandilynn Garcia (Josue), Brittany (Robert Hughes Jr), Paul Bruce Harwood (fiancé Brenn) and Tia Sisler; great grandsons James Willard “Wiley” Harwood II and Bryson Conrady and dog Foo-Foo. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Delores “Dee” Harwood (nee Urbanik), daughter Susan, grandson James “Wiley” Harwood and his parents.
The family will receive friends Wednesday November 12, 2025 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Thursday November 13, 2025 at 9:45 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 S Lake St, South Amherst. The Rev Timothy O’Connor, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where VFW Post #1079 of Elyria will conduct military honors.
