Irene M. Ross, 98, Famous for Her Hungarian Cooking

Photo of Irene M. Ross Irene M. Ross (nee Bors), 98, of Lorain, passed away at Avon Oaks Caring Community on January 15, 2026.

She was born in Lorain on June 19, 1927, and was a lifelong resident until moving to Avon Oaks assisted living and, eventually, the nursing facility about 10 years ago.

Irene attended Brookside High School and graduated as class president in 1945 with a class of 18. She was very active in high school and was a cheerleader.

Following high school, she worked at Heilman’s Restaurant in Lorain, for a short time, where she met her husband, Walter “Bud” Ross, when he was home on leave from the US Navy. He showed up in his Navy uniform – that was the beginning of a 50 plus year marriage. Irene became a full-time homemaker, raising 3 children. She was famous for her Hungarian cooking.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Walter “Bud” Ross in 2012, father Jess Bors, when she was only 8 years old, her mother Mary Latrany her stepfather Mike Latrany, her brother Jess Bors and her stepbrothers Ed & Bill Latrany.

She is survived by her children Wayne Ross (Dottie), Diana Gradisek (Bob) and Terry Ross, grandchildren Michael Ross, Jenn Ross, Nathan Ross, Dr Amanda Gradisek and Ben Gradisek as well as 6 great-grandchildren

Irene’s family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Avon Oaks Caring Community and Suncrest Hospice for Irene’s long-term compassionate care.

The family will receive friends Monday January 19, 2026 from 11:00 am until the time of the mass of Christian Burial at St Peter Parish, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
