Ronald P. Matty, 78, Avid Gardener
Ronald P. Matty, 78, of Avon, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 14, 2026 with his family by his side.
He was born November 15, 1947 in Lorain to Paul & Jennie Matty (nee Horton). He grew up in Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School in 1965. He was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany.
Ron worked as a maintenance foreman at CEI (later First Energy) in Avon Lake before retiring.
An avid gardener, Ron enjoyed growing orchids and other flowers as well as vegetables in his greenhouse at home and was a member of the West Shore Orchid Society. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. He also was a gifted forger of knives, intricate etching of the blades as well as carving other metals and wood with fine artistry.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Susan Matty (nee Kerecz), daughters: Melanie Harlan (Matt) and Charity Gangale; grandsons: Ben & Ian Harlan and sister Cindy Kalassay (Bela). He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends Sunday February 22, 2026 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. The mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday February 23, 2026 at 10:00 am at St Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St Joseph Dr, Amherst. The Rev Timothy O’Connor, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
