Gerald Jerome Ludwig, 90, United States Army National Guard Veteran

Photo of Gerald Jerome Ludwig Gerald Jerome Ludwig, age 90, of Lorain, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his residence during the early morning hours of Monday June 15, 2026.

Jerry was born in Lorain and remained a life-long resident of the city. As a youth he attended St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish School and later graduated from Lorain High School.

He was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Private First Class in the Light Weapons Infantry attached to Company Q of the First Training Regiment.

Jerry began his working career in the parts department of the former Llewellyn Pontiac / GMC dealership in Lorain; he later joined the Ford Motor Company and embarked on a career as an assembler on the commercial line of the automaker’s Lorain Assembly Plant. A long-time member of United Autoworker’s Local 425, he retired in 1991.

Jerry enjoyed a multitude of hobbies including woodworking, as well as collecting both clocks, and military memorabilia with a special focus on military radios. He found the greatest level of relaxation, however, in the hours dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of his 1929 Ford Model A Coupe.

Jerry welcomed every opportunity to share his various collections with his grandchildren and was well known for his mechanical aptitude which enabled him to disassemble and repair just about anything. In addition, he was also known for his expertise in brewing coffee and always had a pot of his epic brew ready to share with family and visitors.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years Patricia (nee Kowalski), son Christopher, daughter Lisa Scarvelli, and granddaughters Ashley and Kathryn.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father Urban Ludwig, mother Dorothy (nee Carstensen), sister Gayle Zadorozny, twin brother James Henry Ludwig, and brothers Donald Ludwig, Sr. and Robert Ludwig.

Visitation will be Friday June 19th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of closing prayers at 10:30 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway, Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church – 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. Reverend Neil G Walters, Pastor of the parish will serve as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

To honor Jerry’s life, his family encourages you to share a cup of coffee with your loved ones, make new memories, and laugh.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are encouraged to either St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church or G.R.I.N. (Golden Retrievers in Need) Dog Rescue.
