James E. Heiser, 81, of Avon Lake died Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria, following a short illness (stroke related). He was born March 16, 1920 in West Chicago, Illinois and moved to Avon Lake in 1956. During World War II, he served in the US Army in a railroad battalion in North Africa and Sicily. He was employed as a truck driver for Cleveland Transfer, retiring in 1981. He attended St. Joseph Church, Avon Lake and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed walking with his great grandchildren and his family.

Steven J. Golek, 76, of Spring Hill, Florida, formerly of Lorain, OH died Monday, July 16, 2001 at his residence after being stricken with an apparent heart attack. Mr. Golek was born on December 19, 1924 in Lorain and was a 1942 graduate of Lorain High School. He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II and saw extensive service in Europe where he was wounded in battle and subsequently served many months as a prisoner of war. He was a Purple Heart Recipient.

Joseph Stefanik, age 85, of Lorain, died Friday, July 13, 2001 in the critical care unit of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following a brief illness. He was born on June 9, 1916 in Clymer, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood. He was a 1934-B graduate of Lorain High School. An accomplished athlete, he was a gifted fast-pitch softball player who participated with the traveling team sponsored by the Slovak Catholic Sokols Fraternal Lodge. He was also known as a top-notch golfer and bowler throughout the Lorain area. He enjoyed traveling.

He was born February 1, 1915 in Lorain, OH and had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 50 years. He was a graduate of Lorain High School where he was a standout athlete in baseball and basketball. He later played semi-pro baseball in Glenn Falls, New York. He went on to serve as an Ensign in the United States Navy from 1940-1945.
